Things We Do Not Discuss
at the Loose Bolt

The following subjects have been retired from conversation by general agreement of the regulars. Not because they’re secret. Because we tried.

  1. The Thursday. Willie and Ruby remember it differently. Both versions are complete, consistent, and incompatible. Retired when it was noticed that every retelling made both versions more detailed and neither more true.
  2. The clipboard. Not because Webb won’t answer. The one time he did, the answer had a second clipboard in it.
  3. Why the van does 42. People who know smile. People who don’t, ask. Asking makes the people who know smile more, and the bar has a limited supply of patience for smiling.
  4. The naming meeting. Discussing the meeting counts as attending it, and nobody wants to be found to have been there.
  5. Where the kitchen keys are. Whoever says so closes the kitchen. The only subject on this list retired purely out of self-interest.
  6. How the bus got here. Retired when the butcher paper behind the parts counter ran out of wall.
  7. What Vern knows. Nobody discusses it. Vern least of all.
  8. The fires. Not retired, exactly. Any one fire may be discussed. Two at once is considered bad manners.
  9. “One more song.” Not a subject. A unit of time. Please do not ask Leon how long it is. He will demonstrate.
  10. Whether the goat is a raccoon. It isn’t. It has told us. Every time someone asks, it calls in again.
  11. Bridges. Specifically, what they would have cost. The regulars will tell you, at length, and then add up nothing else.

Your stay.
